Powering Public Servies Efficiently: The Green Block Initiative

The Anguilla Renewable Energy Programme (AREP), under the EU-funded, RESEMBID-supported project “Streamlining Anguilla’s Energy Sector Towards a More Sustainable Future”, has completed its Green Block Initiative – an initiative focused on the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and energy conservation practices.

Over the past weeks, a series of energy retrofits were completed across multiple government buildings located around Carter Rey Boulevard, Calvin Washington Lake Road, and Albert Lake Road. These facilities now form what is officially known as the Green Block.

Why the Green Block  Matters

Energy audits revealed that lighting and air conditioning account for nearly 94% of energy use in public buildings, with air conditioning alone responsible for approximately 74%. In response, the Green Block initiative focused on upgrading outdated systems with LED lighting and inverter air conditioning units, proven technologies that significantly reduce energy consumption and operating costs.

Beyond energy savings, these retrofits represent a tangible shift in how government facilities can serve the public more efficiently, comfortably, and sustainably. This includes cooler classrooms, brighter offices, and lower energy bills that all point to the same goal of better public service delivery powered by smart and efficient energy solutions.

A Model for Energy Efficiency

The Green Block stands as a proof of concept for what is possible in Anguilla’s built environment. It shows that strategic, well-planned energy interventions can dramatically reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels while freeing up government resources for other critical development needs.

This milestone also serves as a template for broader replication across other public buildings, private sector facilities, and homes. As more stakeholders witness the tangible benefits, momentum is building to make energy efficiency the norm rather than the exception.

Every Efficient Choice Counts

The Green Block reminds us that every retrofit, every flipped switch, and every smart choice contributes to a more sustainable future. LED lighting can use up to 80% less energy, while inverter air conditioners dynamically adjust to reduce electricity use —translating to cost savings, enhanced comfort, and reduced emissions.

We are #PluggingIntoTheFuture — building a resilient, efficient, and greener Anguilla, one building at a time.
